Hair Porosity: Learn Yours

Hair Porosity: Learn Yours

FIND YOUR POROSITY

Hair porosity is a description of how easily your hair absorbs and retains moisture. Hair that is highly porous has a large number of open cuticles and is more prone to dryness and breakage. Low porosity hair has closed cuticles which make it difficult for moisture to penetrate. Knowing your hair porosity can help you choose the right products and treatments for your hair type.

THE TEST

Take some strands of clean hair from your brush or comb and drop them in a cup of water. Let them sit for a few minutes. If your hair floats, you have low porosity. If it sinks, you have high porosity. (It may float somewhere in the middle of the bowl if you have medium porosity.)

LOW POROSITY

Low porosity hair is hair that has difficulty absorbing moisture, since the cuticles are very tightly bound. To help, try using Let’s Get Down and Dirty (Turmeric Detox) once a month to remove buildup, avoid over-washing, and use lightweight and oil-free products. Shampoo with Honey Banana Hydrating (Organic) Shampoo & Conditioner. Honey has emollient and humectant properties that add moisture to the hair follicles. Additionally, try using warm water to open the cuticles and allow the moisture to penetrate. Lastly, you can use Rosemary Strengthening Honey Silk Treatment to help maintain moisture. Remember to use the Thirst Quencher Duo daily.

HIGH POROSITY

If you have high porosity hair, it means your hair absorbs moisture quickly and easily, but it can also lose moisture and protein just as quickly. To help keep your hair hydrated and healthy, it's important to use moisturizing products that are specially formulated for high porosity hair. Use Spinach Reconstruction (Organic) Shampoo & Conditioner and avoid using harsh shampoos. Try to use OYA-tein Protein treatment monthly. OYA-tein deep penetrating treatment is great for a damaged weak breaking hair. Remember to use the Thirst Quencher Duo daily. Additionally, you should look into protective styling to help keep moisture in longer.
